Chet first made headlines in for his substance abuse, and has previously spoken about his addiction to drugs and alcohol on Instagram. He's reportedly been sober since , and credits the birth of his daughter with forcing him to get clean. He entered rehab for cocaine addiction later that year. Also in , Chet came under fire for repeatedly using the N-word on social media, then aggressively defending its use because he believes it 'unifies the culture of hip-hop across all races', telling people to 'get with the times'.

But then in January at the Golden Globes, accompanying his father to the ceremony, Chet was criticised for attempting to speak Jamaican patois on the red carpet.
